Nōtan

Nōtan (濃淡), a Japanese design principle, emphasizes the harmony between light and dark in composition. In drawing and painting, it often refers to a two-tone abstraction of a subject showing either the bright tones versus dark tones, or light areas versus shadow areas. You can use a Nōtan study to organize tonal distribution and refine the basic compositional balance of a work prior to detailed rendering.
