A value study is a small drawing made for the purpose or orgnaizing tonal values in a subject. Typically, values are organized into 3-5 value groups, depending on the complexity of the subject.

A value study can be done as an exercise to develop the skill of tonal organisation or as a preliminary drawing for the purpose of resolving value orgnaisation in a final work.
