Blending Stumps

Blending stumps are tightly rolled paper tools used to smooth and blend dry media like graphite, charcoal, or pastel. They excel at creating even gradations, softening edges, and achieving subtle tonal transitions in drawings.

Blending Stump

Unlike fingers or erasers, blending stumps don't introduce oils or substances that could damage artwork. This makes them ideal for detailed work and preserving the integrity of the original medium.

The risk of using blending stumps is in over-blending, which can lead to loss of texture and detail. Many instructors caution beginners against using blending tools early in their training. My attitude is that experimentation provides us with valuable hands-on experience to understand benefits and limitations of any tool or method.
